Language Offenses

In different times, an occasional change of wording might have gone unnoticed or seemed innocent. Now with the shackles of holidayization on us it's necessary to view these language laws differently.

Tradition - Specific Phrases

These are customs or traditions that have a long history of association with Christmas and not with other holidays. It's the stuff of which Christmas is made. This is the word "Christmas" as it naturally occurs describing decorated trees (Christmas trees), as well as Christmas stockings, mistletoe, egg nog, carols, etc. These phrases should be left alone.

Changing them now under the laws of holidayization shows disrespect for Christmas and is one of the worst offenses. If "Holiday" is used to describe these kinds of traditions, language is being used to slight Christmas. It's not even a natural way to talk. Let the people responsible know that you are offended and don't support this use of language and don't support them. Write letters, call, or e-mail them. If you don't know what customs and traditions are unique to Christmas, there are countless books on the fascinating subject. Public libraries are treasure troves of information on cultural history. If I encourage people to take action around this problem alone, I will feel this web site is a success.
