Ho Ho Ho from Santa's Village!!! Entered: Monday 28th of November 2005 11:46:18 AM
Santa's Village--an "M and M" colored attraction in the Santa Cruz Mtns. we would pass by on our way to the beach in Santa Cruz and actually went to once in 1965 for a birthday party. I remember giant mushroom stools and kiddie cars we drove. The first Santa there was Carl Hansen from Denmark. A puppet thetare was set up there by Angela Combs Canright, who hailed from my hometown of Chico. Known as "The Puppet Lady," Angela had a long interest in puppet thetare and established theatres not only at Santa's Village but at Happy Hollow and Frontier Village in San Jose. Also in residence (they were allowed to live in the Landreth Errington home until their deaths in the early 1970's)were Swedish landscape gardeners Svea Linquist and Olga Olson. There they planted camomile for ground cover and a birch sapling that Svea smuggled into the U.S. from Sweden under her coat. They created a rock garden in the front yard. Developer Noorudin Billawalla purchased the Santa's Village property in 1966 and continued to run it for ten years, when Billawalla changed the park's name to "The Village" and promoted an Arts and Crafts fair in 1978. The gates were closed in 1979, suffering from competition from the beach, boardwalk and rainy December weather. The man in the suit in the black and white picture George, Liberace's brother.
